[Suggestion] Add dedicated servers
instead of using P2P for sessions, can we have dedicated servers, so the host doesnt always have to "host" the game and players can join anytime, with kick/ban, player limits, password protection functionality..

ImergThe game is not for long term survival though. It's supposed to be a finite time you spend before going back to station and do it all over again.
-
29 Aug, '21
BazImerg, in my opinion that's even more reason to have dedicated servers. We are limited on time, so the urgency for others outside of the host (if the host is busy) to jump in and do stuff before the 21 days runs out is absolutely needed.
-

NotAWaffleI believe at some point, maybe full release, any player will be able to host a drop if they are a part of it, allowing any player to join at any time, the beta was clearly lacking quite a bit of the multiplayer functionality, however in the future anyone on the drop should be able to start hosting/continue hosting if the original host has to leave/is not available.
-

KevinNot important atm imo. Would rather they focus on bugs and adding other features/dlc.

DeathEmberIntended functionality: It doesn't matter who 'claimed' the prospect and hosted originally. Hosting is supposed to migrate player to player as needed. If nobody is online in the prospect and you re-join, you become the host and load the world state from the RW save servers.
When working as intended, there is no limitation on who plays or when. The P2P host migrates as needed. -
11 Sep, '21
BartDifferent time zones, players having a real life and want to jump in and out with friends, poor upload internet quality, lots of reasons to give a better experience with a dedicated host.
-

Scottie HenryYES, this is so important. It's 2021 and I'm unable to play because X person in our group is not online. I don't mind having to pay to host the server, but this is so vital. I won't be recommending that anyone go near this game until we get dedicated.
Peer to peer is and always has been trash. There are many bizarre dev choices in this game, but this is right at the top. -

LaredoI have played both weekends with the same 2 players. first weekend friend A hosted. no one could join game if he was offline and only once on that weekend did friend B take over game when friend A logged off. It stated i was was off planet and would not let me take over game when both A & B players left. This weekend i hosted the game. Every time i logged it forced both player A & player B off game and they could not log into game and had to start they on game. This weekend both player A & Player B had numerous issues joining my game eventually they created a 2nd char. and was able to get back in my game with the their 1st char as a work around. A dedicated server host would have solved this issue and anyone of us could have started the game up when ever one of us would of logged in. Since we as players pay for the servers this doesn't cost Icarus any extra cost /resource issues as the players pay for it.

Fatal KingHaving a dedicated server in this day and age with the survival genre of games should be a no brainer. Give players the freedom to manage the environment, otherwise you fall into the same realm as Fallout 76 and we all know the mistakes made with that game that Bethesda is attempting to correct. Don't be like Fallout 76.

HermesReally need a fully dedicated hosting solution, also with the lobby part, because thats also the shitty thing of the content right now (forcing you to a fully online solution)
Even if it seem to be interesting in its form, we have the both cons of the self hosting and fully online dependant, and it's not really good for the future. -

SaraI would love to be able to run a dedicated server on my own hardware. Since the game is session based rather than persistent, I imagine it would work differently from other games I have run servers for. I imagine there being some way to run a small controller server that can spin up a dedicated server per prospect somehow. Game state would still be centrally/remotely stored and the server would be responsible for updating the store similar to what the host does now.
A system like this would be great to allow people to jump in and out of the prospect on their own schedules without requiring the host player to be available. -
24 Sep, '21
JoewAlabelI totally agree with this. And a dedicated server that u can host by your own (with your computers, your internet link, your structure, not those companies that offers host with bad service and poor quality).
I have SO MANY FRIENDS that does not buy the game just because the way it is. Lagged servers, high ping and no way to config your server as we want. -
27 Sep, '21
JRCLARK25Especially in BW3 I noticed huge lag spiked and crashes about 50% of the time when my buddy joined on me.
Server for this kind of game would be tricky being session based. But definitely would improve performance for host and connected peers -
27 Sep, '21
lielosI don't know why we need dedicated server, P2P are perfect for this type of game.
When I read why people tell they want dedi Serv they are mostly already in the actual fonctionality, and other is mostly for long term play
But fonctionality like password protection or white list can be usefull for a private party (but this fonctionality are fully compatible with P2P ) -
28 Sep, '21
Fau1ty LogicI think dedicated has advantage too. cause what if I don't have the greatest internet/hardware but want to play. As of right now the host get hit with resource straining and lets say I have worse connection the server is not auto updating based on best connection. So then all connected also can be adversely impacted
-
01 Oct, '21
trav76401The only thing I feel that needs to change here is to allow the current host to pass that role on to another player, before he or she logs off. I like the way the hosting works now, but I do not like that everyone gets kicked when the host logs. To prevent players from going AFK, implement an auto eject timer, if they are the only one left on the prospect.

Patrix87This game is must have dedicated servers to be worth it. I don't see it being successful with people that don't have that much time to play or on different schedule without that feature. Also the ability to host those servers on your own hardware is a must. Not some Battlefield exclusive hosting deals with selected companies BS.
-

DiamondsOriginally I liked how much resources and money it would be saving developers that could be better allocated for other things.... but upon playing BW4, I'm no developer or understander of code, but it does seem like 90% or more of the issues with bugs and such had to do with different players in a prospect, their systems trying to talk to eachother or talk to whoever was hosting. If all that was being talked to was a dedicated server, it seems like there would be far less bugs for one thing and far less performance issue too. I have a decent rig, but everytime an additional player would load, I would lose around 5-10 fps per additional person (I had up to 5 people at one time counting myself).
-
20 Oct, '21
Frankie DavisI would 100% be willing to pay for a GPortal server or the like. I already have one for Astroneer and it was absolutely the best thing I ever did.
There is a ton of stability to be gained from having a dedi and the devs have already talked about there being a free-roam mode of some sort.
Having a host or P2P based system means one person is also eating up cpu additionally from each client that connects.
Not a fan of how these systems work, myself. -
30 Oct, '21
StormfuryI would love to see a server version that allows for you to invite friends and have multiple drops. The server would be the station if you will. # of cores or memory would determine the number of drops supported.
-
02 Nov, '21
Rico Da RebeiraIll only support this if how the game currently is with P2P stays because where i live we dont have the infrastructure to always have dedicated servers and I dont feel like connecting to Europe to play the game.
So if you guys want Dedicated then I want to be able to host still. -
05 Nov, '21
Markus FeußnerThis is needed, even on missions that only take a day or two.
It is unreal, that the host is being "punished" for hosting a game. By punished I mean, that even if they are the first one to return to the drop pod after fulfillment, they have to stay until each and everyone else has left.
While doing the mission, they have to be online at all times anyone else wants to play.
At the very least it needs the ability for others to return to a prospect they were a part of, even if the owner is not online.
Other games (mainly RTS) transfer the hosting to another player when the host leaves.
This might be a solution here. -

CorheanHaving dedicated hardware available for prospects would be great- having to back out and reload each time a user goes offline is cumbersome, and the idea of having someone keep their computer running with hte game open is unreasonable if someone is just going to be away for an hour. My group spans at least 7 timezones, so folks can come in and out regularly. Having dedicated hardware that maintains the session would be nice. Added bonus if the "platform" could host x number of concurrent prospects so a group of friends can have some variety but also extra stability.

ChrisDefinitely need the option. All the people who are against this haven't been dropped from 5 or 6 sessions each time the current host crashes and disconnects everyone then someone else has to host until they crash and disconnect everyone. If we had a dedicated server, only the user crashing would be disconnected and everyone else could continue rather than everyone waiting at the 5 minute loading screen every 45 minutes.

RichieGreat to see Admins merge other threads into the one that matters most to players and yet Devs Ignore the issue, now the game is fully released the same problems are still here. News flash we didn't buy this for singleplayer PVE, Multiplayer PVE or PVP is what we want. But with the ongoing P2P issues and network connection failure because there is no NETWORK there to connect to i see the game being dead in the water in a week or two unless something is done. Done the first 4 missions and turned the game off as the Bland Single player pve just doesn't cut the mustard.
Not matter what mission your doing the games just repetitive. If Multiplayer worked I'm sure there would be laughs to be had hours burned by construction and missions being done together. until p2p is fixed or servers are introduced the gamed dead in the water. -

JessicaDedicated Server files are a must, I run a community of almost 3,000 members and Icarus has been a game they would like to see us host if the functionality becomes available, Dedicated Servers through Valve protocol including a server list creates large communities, usually from here the steam workshop becomes a want as well.
The second a game receives good modding support as well as dedicated servers, the game often lives longer and is a much more enjoyable and unique experience.
Bringing Icarus servers to the hosting communities will also be like free advertisement as 10's of thousands of players that are already interested in these kind of games will see the community hosting it, ask what it is and then not too long later you have another customer :) -

EPiQHaving played 33 hours since launched, I would gladly pay for a server host for the game. Even if it was 1 of the 8 prospector spots as a workaround.
The impact the game has on the host's framerate compared to solo runs is generally enough to lower my FPS (3080Ti FTW, 8700K 4.0 OC) from 90 with 2 players to 20-30 with 5 people.
I love the way the "sync" is designed, it just simply pains my group to have to draw straws on who hosts. Most can't even handle it, driving many of us AWAY from the co-op experience to better enjoy the experience. -
06 Dec, '21
AndreasRyzen 5900, RTX 3080, 32GB RAM, going from 140FPS when solo to < 30FPS when hosting for 4 other people. Dedicated servers or a huge performance patch is definitely neccessary, currently seems to be CPU locked due to not utilizing all available cores.
-
06 Dec, '21
Snoochy42the only reason i could see them allowing dedicated server is because of an issue of a prospector Re-Hosting a mission that has a sub-par computer that has occasional lock ups, being the host. this has happened to me on several occasions, at which case we have to ask the person to leave the game, so we can get a better host. *shrug*. but other then that uncommon occurrence and possibly with a Host having a satellite connection with 500ms+ being a jerk. I think the P2P wide range hosting was handled pretty well and was a cleaver implementation.

Novacekmmaybe they don't want more players or more copies sold, but this game without dedicated servers will be over as quickly as it started. It's like playing an ARK with 10% content and still solo.
The motivation to build anything (which I find to be one of the most addictive elements) is gone because I lose everything with every mission.
So we create an Outpost, but then again others can't play there unless I'm playing, it's really unpolished and I don't understand how they can write that they don't plan to add dedicated servers.
For now we're all refunding the game because without dedicated servers it's money wasted. -
07 Dec, '21
RichieElissa, I understand you released the game before it was complete, but most of the community are looking for a fix to the on going multiplayer issue. This is the reasoning behind the requests for a dedicated server as we all know this works well on nearly every game out there. The P2P is basically for LAN and has never worked well online. There are 3 types of Server ( Dedicated / Listen / P2P ) in this situation the Listen side of the P2P is not working as this is what calculates everything within the game from resource to players etc and basically the management interface if this was working i'm sure the P2P would also but what would i know i guess. P2P should be left for torrents not gaming imo.

JoeSad to see you arent prioritizing dedicated servers. This game should have never launched without the ability to host one. Played for an hour last night and had fun, was told by one of my friends today about multiplayer being p2p. That's a deal breaker. p2p is always garbage in comparison.
Kind of put off by the "well our game isnt for everyone" admin comment too. Okay, but it would have been FOR a lot more people with a fairly straightforward change/addition to hosting mechanics as the people here arent asking for GAMEPLAY changes we are asking for INFRASTRUCTURE changes, fairly critical ones considering the focused multiplayer aspect of the game.
We've got a group of ~10 players that would have definitely had interest in this game, moving from ARK which we have played to death and are looking for something new, but no dedicated servers mean no joy, regardless of how unique the gameplay elements are.
Refunded until this feature gets added. Hopefully you come to your senses. -

Some1ellseHaving a dedicated server is something I always look for in a game. Having the ability to independently control the server you are connecting to is a huge thing for a lot of people. Personally I enjoy being able to host various game servers for my friends, and have been known to have more fun setting up and configuring game servers than I have actually playing the games I'm hosting. I'd love to see a dedicated server for this game, to bring that control into the players hands and potentially create a much better experience for them, that can be curated specifically for them, by them, or by someone they know personally and trust.
-

Elissa - Producer AdminHey all, we're hearing your complaints, I assure you. Is not a small job unfortunately, to add dedicated servers. We've been focusing on other higher priority tasks, like optimisation, and the P2P connections, which are much more viable and rewarding right now. That's not to say we won't have dedicated servers eventually, Dean has said that he wants them! The stability and performance goals we're working towards are definitely something we're working hard at nailing for you though, and will be a much more rewarding fix.

NeolitzAdd subscription for dedicated hosting integrated within the game would be so good, also ability to choose which server they prefer.
-

RhavokThe client is acting like a dedicated server without the same resources. It should not be a coding feat to just make it clientless and add a password option where someone could join it. That is basically what the P2P is doing with your friends list. Also saving the characters/world locally to the server would not be difficult either.
Dedicated advantages
1. No one gets knocked offline if the host looses connection
2. Resources on a server are dedicated to running the game without the client overhead
3. Game/players saved locally, no need to lock this down as there is no competitions or cash shop options
4. Options for customizing server settings
Just my 2 cents. Many other games people keep going back to such as Ark, 7d2d, etc are still enjoyable because you can customize your play experiences. -
09 Dec, '21
S. C.An advantage of dedicated servers for me is that you can try to spin them up halfway between you and your friends. In my case that is west coast US, so I'll have 180 or so ping (from AU) and they'll have 100 or so (from midwest).
As the game is now, I'm not even sure we'll be able to play it together, though I haven't tested it yet. -
09 Dec, '21

The impact the game has on the host's frame rate compared to solo runs is absurd.

-

ArneI find the current solution rather geniuous. It's so easy to host. Every player can continue to play at any time. It doesn't cost money to run a dedicated server. I don't need to maintain my own server.
Please do not remove the possibility to run it without server. 🥺 -

vans100% want to see a little more continuity between missions. I reckon that when doing a mission which is a node that other missions branch out from all buildings and changes to the world a should be be maintained. So maybe you're only starting from scratch every 5 missions or so.
-
11 Dec, '21
JamesWith the way the game currently works there does not appear to be any real need for dedicated servers. Bandwidth never seems to be an issue when hosting (i have terrible network) and the fact that progress syncs for all players regardless of if they are there is amazing and does not require a payout of a server on client side.
-

Sonar The Synth#2761Don't ask for this, when the game doesn't even have a fully fleshed out server of its own yet. A DS isn't going to fix your problems. You really should not be asking for dedicated servers so early in a games lifespan.

KozzmaI Run private game servers for my friends and we have different gamin hours. I Use a VM to run Ark, Conan, 7D2D, Rust, Minecraft and Wreckfest to name a few.
I think having the ability to host privately would have potential and have the ability to perform random missions supply drops for additional cash / unlocks.
I could wait and would be willing to pay for a DLC that would allow for Random gen maps for us "Space Explores". everything I have seen so far is fantastic. I understand the challenges to making such a addition to a game that has been polished as much as this has. The only other request is for there to be an official server manager for the hosted server. Thank you for the great work on this and I hope this is only the beginning. -
14 Dec, '21
realonezI would also like dedicated servers, Just for the fact every time I'm hosting my performance drops considerably while my friends performance is much higher.
Why should I be punished for playing with friends, So having dedicated servers would solve this issue. -

VizionzI7 7700k + GTX 1080 + 32Gb Ram ;
Playing solo at medium graphic settings is an amazing experience ! minus couple of minor stutter / optimization needed here and there but normal and non game breaking for a launch.
Playing multiplayer as the host with one friend = huge drop in performance / kinda acceptable but.. still enjoyable.
2 or more friends connected as im the host = My PC get slammed by a sledge hammer and drop my FPS at 20 consistent... with some drop under 10 here and there... Not fun at all. -
22 Dec, '21
JuasonasonThis should be marked as a non issue and archived. I think the only reason this has so many upvotes is because people just don't understand how the technology for this game works. It's meant to have many short sessions/missions. Most missions can be done in just a few hours. So much overhead to have a dedicated server where the mission is only a few hours long. The admin running the DS would have to manually start each mission, whenever someone wanted to play, which would still end at a specific time and delete any characters/exotic gear in the session. Can't think of any circumstance where this is beneficial, and I play games such as Valheim and Ark on a DS with friends all over the world.
I get that some folks don't have the hardware or internet services that are ideal for hosting sessions, and for that, my only suggestion would be that the game could autodetect which player has the best hosting conditions and prompt to change the host. -

DeViTToDedicated servers for prospecting, NO. That should have it's own kinda free mode, like the Outpost, maybe a bigger open world map. For prospecting, it should be awesome to see a list of players who are doing a prospect, sorted by region, US, europe, etc. , and if set to public you can join them or finish yours.
Awesome feature for dedicated servers should be that on each server you have your own character, it has to level like on other games. So on first server join, you have to create you character first. -
17 Jan, '22
MrDonPotatoI'd really like this feature, for me its more about trying to improve game performance, I'd rather have dedicated server to do the hosting so I can get a more consistent performance, even with my RTX 3080 I struggle to maintain 60fps at times!!
-

Scott JonesI think for sandbox mode this would be a great feature but, for prospects, of course not.

VenducatiMoving forward into further areas of the Icarus world (if this is the path that the game will take later on?), the sore thumb that really sticks out is how are future areas going to be added if the client system has to bare the administrative costs of what a dedicated server is designed to take. A dedicated server is a must for load-balancing on the clients end. Otherwise, you're telling your base to buy faster systems to keep servicing and antiquated way of networking such as p2p. And the constant having to back out of your game session while the person who hosted the game has to log for the night etc. and then the other player comes in to assume the host session is just low-tech in a big way. I realize initial startup costs of creating a new game title can be quite expensive, but even the guys that made Path of Exile at Grinding Gear Games were aware this fact and their setup from the get go was/is server based and not p2p. So, please make server based play a priority.

jeremiejtLike says in this post : https://icarus.featureupvote.com/suggestions/265503/observation-very-poor-performance-on-multiplayer
We had bad perf issue on Multiplayer for the player hosting the game,
So maybe installing a dedicated server on another machine could improve perf of the player who was hosting the game.
And possibly allow groups to play with a bad internet connection which therefore cannot host playing on a rented server with a good connection.
(I know that the game is not planned to run H24, otherwise the storms would destroy all the constructions over time, but it should be possible to launch the instance on the server only if at least one player is connected) -

darvanenNot necessary, the fact that you can pick up the mission and host it when your friends are offline is *way* better than a dedicated server i.m.o.

VolkoveWe should, at least, be able to create a headless client. I would like to just run a program on my server that is tied to my account. Whenever I claim/resume a prospect and load in, instead of my computer hosting, my server does automatically and I simply connect to it, even solo. When I(and everyone else, if in multiplayer) leave the server shuts off the mission. This would help a lot with performance especially when hosting for myself and several friends. This will also preserve the session based survival aspect that the devs dont want to mess up. Just have everything seemingly the same but just offload the hosting process to another computer.

Same as aboveEither dedicated server or fix hosts performance hit. I go from 100 fps to 40-50 with one person. Even worse for 4 player group. Game is basically unplayable 20 fps at that point.

Erk Gloomdedicated servers would be helpful but they're not needed. If you really want them, you'd learn to code them yourself as a mod for the game.
Pointless otherwise.
I know my opinion isn't going to be a popular one. -

Raging MidgetThis may not be necessary from a gameplay perspective, but just the basic performance of having a dedicated server would be amazing. I enjoy playing this game with my friends, but the amount of stress on the host's computer/internet sometimes makes the game unplayable.
Obviously dedicated servers won't fix every issue in the game, but it would be exciting to see them implemented. -

zekeyeah dedicated servers will always be better, the stress that is caused due to P2P is ridiculous. with 2 additional players to the host really hits fps, livestock spawn, and other resources specially if the players are away from the host. I've had 6 people additional to me and i was running off 20fps due to the stress one my rig.
and my rig is beefy
12core cpu
3080ti
64gb ram
and my internet is 1gig fiber
and that was me running everything on low & medium settings in order to cope with the stress of the amount of players on
if they don't want to do it for the prospects they should at least allow it for outposts. -

Aaron ReedHi! Dedicated servers would be essential to the long term playabilty of Icarus. Please see my full feedback of this game here: https://steamcommunity.com/id/moosemilker/recommended/1149460?snr=1_5_9__402

BalaurOur group has players from Nordics and eastern Europe to western US. We would like to be able to setup our dedicated server eg. in Germany to have a decent latency for everyone.

Brian L.Wow, I saw some gameplay on youtube. The graphics and gameplay look incredible. However once I did some research and found that the game does not support dedicated servers or long term survival I was instantly turned off. Sorry but I won't be considering purchasing this game nor will I recommend it to my friends. We have 11private servers on Gportal and all 5 of us play survival games. If we cannot jump on and off at will and have our game play count towards our groups overall progress we're not interested.

DaveSo there are inherent difficulties with using a dedicated server. Does the server have to be reconfigured every time to host a specific prospect or does it need to be able to host multiple prospects? How does the character progress stuff get sent back to HQ? Does the server do that? Or does it still come from the client?
From a performance perspective, I think it would be better for there to have an option of a dedicated server to handle animal life AI and environment, etc. limiting the impact on the clients forcing one of them to be the host.
Maybe there's a hybrid solution, Online play, Dedicated Server, and Offline. Dedicated server behaves much the same way as Offline mode where progress for characters is stored on said server.
However the logistics of doing that on the surface sound very complex and take a lot to do. I hope you do it, giving my thumbs up vote, just wanted to provide some raw thoughts. -
