[Suggestion] Repair should NOT use resources at benches but do in field
Resources are scares and it's already tedious to find enough as is. Items shouldn't require resources to repair as you're already having to sacrifice by going back to base to use crafting benches etc.
I'd recommend instead, if you want to repair in the field you spend resources to craft items to repair weapons etc. ie. whetstone, gun kit, etc.
At some point fun needs to trump realism. It's silly I have to spend 1 steel bar to repair a pickaxe, yet I can hammer all day on stone and wood walls to repair them without resources.

Fau1ty LogicI agree with most of this. I think it gives benefit to building but how do you define home base. What would prevent building a hut to repair granted weight is a factor but I would suggest a radius based on the respawn Bed or new item in tandem with the items. While you could change the bed every cave it you do that you risk dieing and spawning far away or new item at base or a setting that can only be change like every 5-7 i game days? But then how does that work with groups. Just thinking out loud

SteveI'm also in favor of general repair kits made of lesser materials that you carry with you (stone, oil, fiber, leather: covers sharpening, cleaning, string replacement, etc.) and a repair bench that can be built that doesn't let you craft items, but lets you repair any item from any bench. The specific crafting benches would be built at a primary base, while the repair benches would be built at satellite camps.

Fatal KingI agree, 1 steel ingot to repair a steel tool whether at a bench or not, it's way to expensive. A repair kit system would be good

PhoteusAs Steve said here - a repair bench that lets you repair anything and make general crafting kits would fit in very nicely. Still costs some resources, but lets you have fun without having to carry entire benches on you and always breaking gear.

ZogTheHogThere is actually a Repair Bench in the tech tree, it just hasn't been unlocked yet. But I agree, I think we should be able to make Repair Kits at least if we can't repair things like guns on our person. It would add to a little more sense of realism if I didn't carry a Machining Bench to the Arctic to have to repair all my gear. But at least if the Repair Bench gets added and weighs at most 10 KG maybe, that would suffice. But Repair Kits would be a great higher tier item. Frankly things like Titanium and even Steel should have an insanely long durability

RustyAdding Talents that allowed repair without the use of a bench would a way to solve this issue. The Talents would have to be unlock, you would need to put a lot of points into it to repair tier 4 items. This would still consume resources to repair the item.
