[Suggestion] Flint-Lock Musket and Pistols
I currently skill into the firearm talent tree, and I realised that while the other combat trees come online right away, due to knives, spears and bows being readily accesible at lvl 1, guns take until level 25 to start to be useful, since you can't craft guns beforehand.
That's why I would like to suggest flint- or matchlock muskets and pistols in tier 2, maybe craftable at level 20, so the talent tree would be useful a bit earlier. These would maybe take longer to reload, be less accurate and do less damage, but cheaper to craft.

HopeSavior MergedIcarus is all about going through different technological stages but when it comes to firearms you just jump straight to modern firearms opposed to going from basic flintlocks to more modern weaponry. Ideally a musket and flintlock pistol would be great, you’d just have to tweak advanced ammunition to use copper, iron and gunpowder while flintlocks would just use iron and gunpowder. It would just make sense from a technology perspective since you go through multiple tiers with every other weapon and tool.

ZogTheHog MergedI think this is a great idea (although the time and intricacy of a flintlock is sort of silly, maybe percussion cap or some other rudimentary rifle) or possibly just making the basic bolt action available at level 20, with the hunting rifle still being at 30.
I think it would be nice to see increased damage starting with the longbow and then the other bows, so that maybe with the right talents and stealth a bow can be just as deadly as a gun (bears I'm looking at you.) I think having both weapon types really be viable would reduce the overarching need to get the gun, and both weapon paths could be as close to equal as possible. -

laurieyes. something needs to be done to make guns accessible at earlier levels because I have made a shotgun exactly one time and I'll definitely stick to my bow thanks. it worked great but the time it takes to get them is stupid for most missions and those that it might be worth it for there's no point wasting talent points on them because you rarely would use them. The whole gun talent tree and guns in general just feel like a huge waste of space.

bullsEYE13449mm MergedThe Flintlock Musket
A .75 caliber flintlock musket that's tier 2, made in the anvil bench from iron ingots, wood and 1 iron ore for the flint and the repair cost. With no talents 1-3 rpm/ with 2-4 rpm. Damage is good enough to kill a polar bear in one headshot. 50 meters is as far a one can hit a man sized target with a smooth bore reliably. Useful at medium range but must make your shot count
musket balls take 3x gunpowder, 1x iron but 2x output of rifle rounds
Stone and Bone crossbow bolts, similar to their arrow counterparts but do a little more damage to offset the crossbow's lower fire rate. ideally I'd be able to make them in my inventory too. I would use the crossbow a LOT more if this was a option as the longbow can one shot most deer in the head vary well and I'd like to use the crossbow for this more but can't be bothered to waste the metal. Better tier crossbows, a tier 3 and 4 option to go with the better bows
A station workshop crossbow and bolts would be nice as w -

Prospector No555 MergedI love the idea of gunpowder weapons, maybe a flintlock pistol, blunderbuss as a pistol/shooty counterpart too. I don't really like how strongly this game forces you to play with bows, if you pick any other combat skill tree you will feel the pain. Now killing a polar bear with 1 shot wouldn't be balanced, but it could more or less be a slow reloading piece o equipment that can get you out of tricky situations in case you don't want to use bows! Ofc bolt action rifle can do that nicely, BUT it takes a lot of time to build that t3 furnace bench and those 40 steel ingots !!!
I would really love to see this implemented ! -

bullsEYE13449mm MergedTo be more clear when I say It should be able to one shot a polar bear, I'm talking if hitting the head from stealth, I agree if it could do it all the time it'd be OP. My thinking was that if you took the time to get within 50m and get a clear shot off hitting the head you would be rewarded with a kill instead of being bear food as the reload would be so slow that at that distance you would still be reloading by the time the bear is eating you. So if you miss critical headshot=dead. Also my thought was it'd be a smooth-bore and therefor beyond 60m it would be shear luck if you hit what your aiming at. Full size smooth-bore muskets can reliably hit a man sized target out to ~60 yards, but any further is more luck than skill. Though the bolt action cannot do this it make up this fact by the ability to hit the head reliably at a greater distance and even at the same 50m you can still kill it because of the higher rate of fire before it reaches you, something the musket simply cannot do.

bullsEYE13449mm MergedOn another note the bolt action can already do this to the normal bears and I don't understand why the polar bears take so many headshots anyway, last I play I'd start with a stealth headshot and still needed at least 2 more headshots to finally bring it down. Personally I'd increase the headshot multiplier on them to make them less spongy and bring them more inline with other threats. To be clear I think there body damage makes sense, just not when I'm hitting the head.

Prospector No555 MergedAdding a little more weapon variety would greatly help. And by variety I don't mean higher tier weapons. We really need low tech weapon variety. Playing with a bow becomes boring really fast as the arrows are homing; lol. I've been playing with spears/firearms and I find the game a lot more challenging it's still easy but not as boring with bows. Now if there was another category of weapons such as this (idk why rusty shotgun needs steel) that for the love of God doesn't need steel to craft, could be anything from slings to crossbows with stone bolts, atlatl, but still flintlock weapons would be the sweetest deal, provided ofc the firearms talent tree becomes decent. Ah just imagine hunting bears on icarus with a homemade potato gun xD. As for polar bears well they are spongy considering the are they toughest normal spawns you can fight, but a headshot could have other effects like slowing/stuning, that would make it ever more rewarding.

Auran Merged“Damage is good enough to kill a polar bear in one headshot.”
While I get that people have different ideas. Please take a moment to consider gamedesign/progression. Such an idea would the game too easy -

bullsEYE13449mm MergedAdmittedly I'm biased toward realistic damage in games and and few thing in real life survive more than a shot or two to vitals, and so forget balancing in favor of that. Now that they added the new and improved status effects and hardened zones. I'm thinking the musket should be buffed like the crossbows with slow.
At the time of writing this that update was not out yet and to compensate for a 20s reload the only thing I could think of was damage.
Also I can't change the main post -
