Allow us to start a new missions while still on planet

The whole whiping mechanism and lack of actual multipart missions currently does not play nicely with the tiers and base building.
What if I just finished a mission and still had plenty of time on the mission timer - if I could then just take the next mission without having to leave planet and get whiped. I think that would help to encourage base building and going to the higher tiers.
If the new mission would have a shorter mission timer than what I have left - then set the mission timer to set shorter timeframe. If my mission timer has less time left well - either keep it or increase it to the new mission - thats up to your reuquirements with house keeping and balancing...

(I still do not like that the timer ticks when I pause playing but that is another story).

it is possible now. you have three character slots and leveling them is very easy atm.

You're forgetting one very crucial part. Each mission has certain areas that you can and cannot visit. If you selected a mission where you would then be out of bounds in, you would die and you would have no way of getting your stuff back.

They have already said they wouldn't pursue persistent bases and what you're asking is kind of riding along in the same boat.
